I KNOW!

that wasn't no CGI either.

REAL SPIT, REAL DOG.

Did anyone get in trouble for that?

reply

I was more shocked when he spit on that Snakeoil salesman's coat.

reply

Well, real dog, anyway. I think it was just to show that he was a crotchety old cuss. He also lets the dog come along with them, showing that he's a crotchety old cuss with a heart of gold.

Who cares.... didn't injure the dog. Anybody ever hear of "sticks and stones, but tobaccy juice ain't gonna hurt ya?

reply

It's OK the real dog had a stunt double!

"that wasn't no CGI either"

They didn't have CGI back then, so there's no way it could have been CGI like you're claiming.

Spitting on the dog was hilarious. It's captures the feel of being an outlaw so well.

First of all, I'm sure it wasnt real spit..the animal rights people would never have allowed that, and second, Josey spit to show his disdain for anything and anyone he didnt like..which was just about anything and everything he saw.
I liked the part in the scene where they first got to the cabin..he was just about to spit on the floor when granny gave him that look that said, "DONT YOU DARE!..this is MY home now."..and he thought better of it.

Obviously it was to show Wales' change in personality, becoming more indifferent and detached for everything.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

It was a part of a character tic and helped set up plot points to drive the story.

Josey's habit forces him to stop at at various stores and mercantiles to load up. 1. The river store at the beginning of the film, 2) the frontier store in the middle where he goes to buy a horse and, last the large town where he runs into the carpet bagger and the union soldiers.

Last the two instances he spit on the dog was to show he did was a grouchy cuss (as pointed out here) and set up the pay-off joke: when they arrived at the bent river ranch, granny took over and began setting up house. When Josey contemplated spitting on the floor, he recanted and swallowed the juice rather than incur the wrath of Granny.

It also signifies the tonal shift in the film. By Josey NOT spitting on the flor, he is rejoining society and giving up his outlaw persona.

Spitting on the dog was a beat that help set up the entire joke. It would be interesting if this film were shot today. Would the PETA people object. Would the shot be accomplished through CG?

reply

Because it was a mangy red-bone hound, that's why.

CGI wasn't used until around 1989 with Arnold's Total Recall. Since this film was made 8 years before the PG-13 rating I wonder if the dog spitting, violence, and nudity would delete the PG and go for a moderate PG-13. I wonder since Eastwood kept spitting on the dog, in those days if the scenes with the animal would have present on set. I kept waiting for the dog to snap and tear Clint a new one for all of that spitting. Another than that, a terrific movie.

Comedy. Simple as that.

reply

It wasn't a real dog. It was one of those autoerotic dogs.

reply

I would hate to see the crying and whining if he would have kicked the dog instead. At the time the film was supposed to take place that was far more likely to have happened.

I'm guessing many comments of "outrage" are just trolls. If anyone is truly upset by this that person is insane. I'm just thinking about how gross dogs are in that they'll eat anything. I just watched Tosh.0 yesterday and one of the videos was of a sleeping girl with a dog just licking her open mouth feverishly, without ceasing. The video went on for 10-15 seconds and the dog was still going. I don't know what the dog was getting out of it and it seemed as if it would just lick up her saliva for hours if no one stopped it. Dog lick up all kinds of vile things...............now people will act outraged that tobacco spit gets on a dog? So what? The dog's probably only concerned if it falls on a spot to where it can't get to it and lick it up.

Get upset about something legitimate. You just come off as insane if you waste your "righteous anger" on this stupid bit from a 40-year old film.

Josey spitting on the dog wasn't abuse anyway. Dogs used in films today endure more rough treatment than a gob of tobacco. He also spits on the bug but it keeps moving along.

By the way, the American Humane Society has not been looking out for animals best interests. Sometime read the story from about a year ago in The Hollywood Reporter...

No one spared a thought for the poor beetle he spat on too?

reply

There is thread about him spitting on the bettle. At least he didn't eat it like Bear Grylis would have.
