Which of these 1970's westerns directed/starring Clint Eastwood is your favorite?
Mine is High Plains Drifter because the story is more focused and ahead of its time. So is the chilling music and film techniques that feel very Hitchcockian.
Josey Wales is good, too. The action scenes and main storyline are exciting, but the story wanders sometimes.
Love 'em both, but the edge goes to Josey Wales.

I'd have to go with Josey Wales. Clint's character is deeper and easier to relate to. I like the symbolism of High Plains Drifter don't get me wrong, but generally more believable stories are better.
shareBoth are enjoyable. But Id say Wales was ahead of its time in that look how much Dances with Wolves took from it, and that went on to win Best film and set a new standard for how Indians/Native America s should be treated with respect. Wales was 15 years ahead of its time.
Same with Escape From Alcatraz and Shawshank Redemption.

Josey Wales. I love High Plains Drifter but TOJW has the most believable, well- written storyline. It is expertly acted and directed. A wonderful story and one any age can enjoy.

But since I'm a traditionalist.....Josey all the way.
I like The Outlaw Josey Wales better.
shareWales. You have to both know High Noon and make the connection in order for Drifter to make sense. That kind of thing isn't always bad, but it makes Drifter pretty much a western cult film.
High Plains just for the audacity of the opening.
