Really? Come on, this movie is good. Sure, it suffers in the editing as a result of being a lot of loose improv, but overall, it's something so unique, you have to give it credit. And what a 70's ending, huh? Maybe if you had watched it all at once instead of stopping to post updates on IMDB, you would have gotten more from it. Maybe. I, for one, haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw it.

It is SUCH a tough watch (I just finished again a few minutes ago...) that I can see how few have heard of it and even fewer appreciate it. I personally love it, and you can sure see how much May, Falk and Cassavetes were into it.

>>People who don't enjoy MIKEY AND NICKY are obviously the majority, and that's very sad. It means that we'll never see Hollywood embrace the rough edged character drama again (they did so in the early to mid 70s, then stopped). Most audiences these days feel they need their big special effects and booming sound mixes and require actors who are far prettier than themselves or anyone they know. What a shame.<<

I agree 100%. It's a study of friendship, betrayal, jealousy and ultimately, responsibility. Many have picked at the movie's technical flaws, but really - so long as you can hear the dialogue - what do those things matter? When it comes to story and acting, this one is tough to equal.

I saw this movie for the first time tonight, at a screening attended by Ms. May: I figured it was worth putting out there that, according to her, there was no improv.

Personally I thought the movie was interesting in many ways, but I found the "personal" dialogue horribly painful and stilted, it felt like serious dialogue through the eyes of a 60s comedian.

;p

Seriously though, I found the dialogue painful... admittedly they (the HFA) billed the movie as one of the best films of the 70s, which can easily set a person up for a let-down...

Now that I'm at home I regret not formulating a question that involved the Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Cassavettes somewhat similar film that came out a short time later (I found that movie far more compelling). I hadn't bothered to figure out what year Mikey & Nicky came out, I was thinking it was far earlier than it was (likely due to the legal wrangling over the movie).

i will defend this movie to the end. it may not be aesthetically pure, and it may have so many goofs and gaffs, and editing problems, but the gist of the whole relationship between mikey and nicky really hits home.
if you've ever had a friend, a true friend, and if they somehow hurt you or betrayed you, you would understand this movie.

the stuff i see in this flick between falk and cassavetes is truly amazing to me. they took their acting skills, and their friendship, to the limits. the slapping scene on the wet dark street was crushing, and yet amazing to me.

i only wish that this was a movie that people had more access to. it really needs to be seen.....it's a jewel...a rough jewel...but a jewel, nonetheless.
