Imagine if this were made today!

I saw this movie with my buddies last night and I was blown away by it: the violence, the language, the nudity, the twisted social commentary, the odd Seventies fashions. It was a cheap film (especially the first twenty minutes), but wow, was it impressive in tone and message.

With the way America sees the influence of media on youth tday, there's NO WAY could this film be made in this day and age. No one would produce it, no one would distribute it, no one would dare exhibit it. Not in this era of "Beavis & Butthead/Doom/The Matrix/Marilyn Manson/Rage/Basketball Diaries/Donkey Kong/Small Wonder/The Journey of Natty Gann/the Bible made me kill."

I saw this when I was a kid, and haven't seen it since. I remember a few of the cooler death scenes...the high diver who dives into a pool with no water! And how cool was it that David turns the lights on right after he left the board so he'd have the terror of knowing he'd be hitting hard concrete. Wasn't there a sequence as well where some hang glider goes into some electrical wires? And, I could be wrong here...but weren't two girls and a guy crushed to death in a tent by a huge boulder? (One of whom played one of the "Eight is Enough" kids? Lani O'Grady?)

Anyway, this is one of those cool lost slashers from the 70's...and they definitely don't make them like that anymore. Check out "Maniac" if you haven't seen it already. A bit different since it doesn't take place in a high school...but also quite disturbing with what the film gets away with.

This movie was made in today's time (well sorta). Heathers starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater came out in 1989, and it is a total ripoff of Massacre at Central High, down to the killing of the popular kids and the ending. I dont know why IMDB doesnt mention that in the fun facts for those films, but it is quite obvious the influence Massacre at Central High had on it (heck even the sappy music with the carnage too).

IMDb mentions that Heathers is a spoof of Massacre at Central High. Going into this film I was expecting a low-budget cheap horror film and got something very different and entertaining. I agree with some of the other posts about how this film is a political allegory for oppression and demand for power - but the message is pretty blatant in the film, especially towards the end. Not to mention this movie is reaching out to the 1970's drive-in crowd, so some people may not even want to think that it has any message. It's easy to see why it has cult status.

One of the best murders was when the dickhead hang glides into the electical wires and gets fried LOL. The dynamite murder was cool too

This movie brings back some great memories. It was quite shocking and disturbing! I didn't see it until 1981 on The Movie Channel. Even after seeing Friday The 13th and Halloween it still held up. It still holds up today in my opinion. Great atmosphere!

first of all, what is dwent talking about? just saw this film after looking for some grubby little cheap sh*t that i sometimes dig and i kinda dug the poor acting and the dialogue is very kitsch nowadays. Generally i thought this was a bit cheap and i know that money isn't everything - driller killer, TCSM, blair witch - to be notorious but let's not see this for anymore than it is. a kitsch horror for the Scream generation to laugh at.

I also think that the general message is laboured and not enough to base the whole film around - yes bullying is bad and affects those bullied in different ways, we get it! at least it's an admiral point to try and get across in a movie though hey? I also disagree with those posts that say the film is ahead of it's time or to that affect. You can simply project this idea onto it because of recent events - when it was made i'm sure the filmmakers had nothing on their mind more than making a quick buck at the drive thru.

@andrews
This wasn't made for any SCREAM generation,since it made long before SCREAM-----the film's obviously different and unique from the typical slasher flick of its era. The director clearly wanted to make a point and used a teen exploitation plot to hang his real message on. And, yeah, this wasn't ahead of its time or anything, and yeah, this definitely inspired HEATHERS---I thought that a long time ago when I read about the film in a book called CULT MOVIES 2. And even it it was remade,it wouldn't get any promotion and would go straight to DVD---like most post-Columbine movies that deal with the subject of school violence.
