Deleted airport fight scene and uncut version

So,after all these years, there are no way to see uncut version of this great movie. Seriously,i think that this movie and Sylvester Stallone's NIGHTHAWKS should be released in their uncut versions. Both movies are missing some great gore scenes. While NIGHTHAWKS is story for itself,MARATHON MAN is not missing great number of scenes, but those parts that are missing were probaly the best parts of the movie and original novel:

Airport fight scene with Doc and two killers,

uncut apartment fight scene,

uncut Doc's death scene,

and extended torture scene.

I really liked this movie and i would like to found out more about cut scenes, especially deleted airport fight scene.Based on some information that i found,it was really violent scene and William Goldman didn't like when they cut it out from movie. Is there some photo from this scene available anywhere? Or at least some interview where makers of the movie are talking about this scene?

Maybe you should just watch some exploitative action movie instead of complaining about Marathon Man not being such...

Hey buddy,i never said that i want to see more "balls to the wall" version of MARATHON MAN. I think that movie works much better with slow and steady (cam :) way . But in my previous post here i was just speaking as a fan of the movie who would like to see some deleted scenes from it.

Trust me,the fact that there are some good gore+action scenes cut out from this movie is my only complaint, but still i wouldn't say that it doesn't have much action in it. My real problem is that i am Roy Scheider fan and his character was my favorite, and any extra scene with him would be good to see.

"Isn't it enough that Hoffman threw his star power around to get the final showdown between he and Olivier changed?"

Yes,that sucks. I liked the ending of the original novel much better.

SPOILERS!

Babe shoots Szell in balls and tells him how all the jews that he tortured are waiting for him to torture him with dentist drills. Then, while Szell is in horrible pain and is almost dead,Babe shoots him, throws the diamonds away and in the end gets arrested.

I really don't know was Hoffman little bit of a pussy (or kiss-ass) because he didn't want to kill Laurence Olivier's character in such graphic way or he didn't want his character to be put in jail.

"(and it remains something of a mystery whether the scripted finale was filmed or not)."

Sorry roeg, but i can tell you for sure that they never filmed original ending. William Goldman got pissed of because of it and because they cut original introduction of Roy Scheider's character.

If you want to know some background info about some of the problems which occured during the first previews, type this in google search:

FSM: Marathon Man (Michael Small)

Here is one part from that page with few words from director John Schlesinger and editor Jim Clark:

The film had its first, successful sneak preview in what the filmmakers described as “Clint Eastwood country,” but a second preview, held in San Francisco, proved much more problematic. According to Clark, “I guess it was the politics of the people of San Francisco coupled with the fact that the air conditioning had broken down. It was hot as hell in there and whenever there was violence on the screen people were shouting ‘Fascist rubbish!’ and things like that.”

Schlesinger felt that “instead of turning on to the emotions, audiences were turning off to the effects of the violence.” He decided to make significant cuts in the more violent scenes, removing the gory shots of Szell’s fountainside disemboweling of Doc and significantly trimming the dental torture of Babe, losing graphic inserts filmed by Clark. Most significantly, Schlesinger eliminated Scheider’s original introduction, a scene retained from the novel in which Doc loses control and kills two assassins after they murder another veteran agent. For Goldman, this was a “grievous” cut, as the original scene established Doc’s vulnerability, showing him as “a guy who’s dead but won’t lie down” and giving Doc’s scenes with Babe a stronger emotional subtext. “Without that eight-and-a-half-minute scene, you see a superstud.”

Had to chuckle at that comment a bit since Eastwood was born and raised in San Francisco, and has spent most of his life in the area.

Actually, he was only born in San Francisco, his father was a migrant work so he grew up all along the coast. Went to Jr High in Piedmont and High School in Oakland.

Please clarify something. With Nighthawks we are deprived of the original version as seen in theaters. It's not clear whether you're claiming these deleted scenes for Marathon Man ever saw the light of day in the original 1976 release. Did they? With Nighthawks part of the problem was music rights. Why the studios further watered down the final shooting is a mystery though.

From what i read online, there were two sneak previews of fully uncut version of MARATHON MAN. One was very succesfull, other was complete failure. Director John Schlesinger then decided to cut much of the violence from the movie.

This is one of the biggest problems that can happen to a movie during the previews. Another good example would be Mel Gibson's BRAVEHEART,which also had negative test screening, forcing the director to cut certain violence and gore out.

As for MM,those two previews that were shown back in '76 maybe had about 100,200 people in the audience, and some of them could still be alive, but i kinda doubt that. Still,it would be good to see scenes that were cut.

NIGHTHAWKS had a LOT of problem during the pre and post production and specially during the filming. I could tell you bunch of stuff about these problems, but most important would be the way that movie was cut down for some great gore scenes and more character development.

Original cut was 140 + minutes long, and it had more scenes with several of the actors plus very graphic violence which was described as Verhooven-like bullet hits and headshots.

Some of my collegues from, how should i say,"searchers for different versions of motion pictures" told me that some European cinema releases had uncut gore. This could be true cause they all mentioned how bloody disco shootout and finale were in this versions.

Yes, I've heard a little bit about that (probably here). However, I was referring to the lousy DVD release. Probably my favorite scene from the whole film is Sly and Billy lurking about the night club looking for Wulfgar with Brown Sugar blaring in the background. Somehow that song fit the moment perfectly.

lolwut?! Because adults in 1976 couldn't possibly live another 37 years?! What are you, 10 years old?

I made a mistake there. What i meant was IF there really were that much people in previews do they still remember any of the deleted scenes. I agree that if there indeed was around 100-200 people in audience of course that some of them are still alive today but question is do they still remember seeing any extra footage.

Not that it would really matter but he was right, 1976 was 39 years ago + apparently people who watched it had to be at least around 20, which would make youngest audience of this movie nowadays around 60 years old and anyone who watch it in their 30's or 40's could be already easily dead being 70-80 years old now, so actually he was right that maybe majority of those people are not here anymore, not sure what were proportions of each age group on test screening.

Just watched Marathon man and came here to check it out. It's not my first time watching it as I have had it stored on my hard drive for years. After reading through this thread I badly want to watch the uncut version!!. Or at least watch the scenes somewhere..Could they be out there on the net somewhere? I love Nighthawks too.
