Their presence seems without purpose but-as another imdb user has pointed out in another thread-they will,or should I say,he-the chief of the gang-will turn out to be the one most helpful character in Babe's nightmare.Because he sees everything as fun unlike Babe.Babe has been called ''paranoid'' but I wouldn't think so,anyway not more than Janeway or,certainly,Dr.Szell.He certainly seems affected by his father's past which haunts him to his college student years while,on the contrary,the chief Latino:
''Danger ain't the catch;it's the fun''.

This movie had no wasted scenes, the mouthy kids were to play a key part in saving Babe. They also afforded a comic moment in a pretty grim film. Another example, after his brother's death, Babe soaks in a bath whilst wearing his Rolex, presumably he forgot in his pain and sorrow to take it off, but - the watch played a key role when he sold it to the cabbie for a handful of change. I love movies that never waste a scene.
