I suppose they might have had enough time to save the babies, even if they didn't show them in the last scene. Probably wouldn't have worked to show a bunch of people holding babies next to the old man. So, I imagine that they were saved at the last minute.
But those cubs were locked up in Cathedral, weren't they? They were trapped in there, and only Sandmen had authorization to get in and out. They were probably screwed.
The society places no value on life. No only is there the renewal thing, but they have no parental structure either, so nobody takes responsibility for the children. And now they are all venturing out of the domes. Uh oh.
