Live Long and Prosper

At the very end when all the young people come spilling out of the city and surround Old Man the people reach out to touch him and there is a scene showing many hands of the people in the crowd. There is a close-up of a man's hand that forms the classic Star Trek Spock gesture of Live Long and Prosper. I have to assume this was a deliberate nod to Star Trek and is meant to suggest that the newly liberated populace will go on to "live long and prosper." Did others notice this? I have not read anything where it was mentioned. Is anything known about who decided to include this? Was it spontaneous by the actor?

Did others notice this? Yes, it's in the "Trivia" section.

Live long and prosper ...

I think they would must likely starve and go exctinct. :D

The old man is telling them how all the mice have gone and there haven't been any fish for a long time and so on, so the food was scarce to say the least.

The ending depressed me when I realized this.

There is actually an email on some blogspot web site by one Adam Wyse who claims to have been the "Vulcan Hand salute kid" and tells a little bit about how he got to be an extra on the movie. He tells that he was mainly trying to find a way to spot himself in the crowd later on. So probably the Vulcan salute was in no way intentional by the director or producer of the movie, but just a fluke by an unnamed extra that managed to sneak through.

Thanks, Thomas! That's interesting. Way to seize the fleeting moment of fame, Adam Wyse. LOL.
