The Carousel

Was it possible for one lucky person to be renewed in the Carousel? If not possible, what would happen if by chance the computer accidently did let someone be renewed in the Carousel? Would they be made physically younger or just have the light on there hand changed?

reply

The people were lifted into the air, and then shot to death with lasers. There was no renewal.

Yes, but what if someone got lucky enough to reach the crystal in the ceiling, let's say by sheer accident or some cheat factor on their part. It would be hard to kill them if they were hugging the crystal at the top, because everyone would see the Carousel was a lie then. Also, perhaps if they did touch that crystal, the computer would change their hand light, due to its program. Yes, it does not allow anyone to reach the crystal, but if someone did (even though it does everything to prevent it) perhaps it is programmed to renew them then. Almost like a glitch in a game or a computer program.

Reaching the crystal would not have made any difference, as there was no renewal. Renewal was a lie, all 30-year-olds died regardless.

The crystal at the top had nothing to do with the "renewal" myth. The laser zapping the hell out of them took them out of the carousel and they (in theory) might get renewed. But the people didn;t have any frame of reference with regards to the nature of renewal.

Logan asks his partner if he's ever known anyone been renewed. the myth even states that Sandmen are always renewed- a myth Logan challenges.

And the computer, silent when asked "no one has been renewed? responds with "the question has been answered".

That's Logan in the corner, losing his religion.

I originally took it to mean as a reference to reincarnation, meaning that their souls or spirits would migrate to the newborn babies in nursery. I'm not sure if that's the belief being propagated, or if they believed that people were literally "renewed." People were exploding right there in front of their very eyes.

I did think the scenes of all the crowds yelling "Renew!" were kind of funny, though. If that was their religion, then they might also have a whole different terminology where "Renew" would be like "Amen." Or, instead of saying "Oh God," women at the height of ecstasy would shout out "Renew! Renew!"

LOL! I usually need at least 15 minutes before I "renew"

You women have it easy. You can renew multiple times in a row.

That's a nice thought, but No one was renewed, it was all a lie.
Although they could see people being blasted, they still buried it.
A bit like people believing in heaven I spose.

reply

Believed it! Not buried it...

I don't recall seeing lasers... figured they were "Microwaved" by those blue waves that came up from the bottom, and they just popped when they were done. :)

The Carousel wasn't designed to renew anyone. It was a killing machine.

It does pay to read the original book. Citizens voluntarily went to a Sleepshop where they were killed. They went to sleep. The Sandmen are actually called DS (Deep Sleep) agents, state executioners, who hunt down those that won't submit to sleep voluntarily.

Carousel is a movie device to make it all a little more impressive. That said, Carousel is the same as a religious experience where renewal is offered. Painless and wonderful. You come back via reincarnation.

Every society has religion. Carousel is the gateway to heaven. Why fight it? Been to church recently? You'll get the same promises there.

The Sandmen were metaphors for failing to obey God (the state). You won't accept the revelation? Then you get hunted down. That is, you go to Hell. Runners were essentially atheists, non-believers. They didn't accept the promise of eternal life and they also rejected the idea of Hell.
