where did the old man come from

sorry it was asked already i cant find the answer:

Was the old man the adult child of 2 runners who had escaped the freezerman robot. Or was he from people who had survived on the surface and not from the city of domes.

reply

He was born and raised outside the domed city. He tells Jessica and Logan that his parents are buried in the leftovers of Washington DC. Jessica and Logan go to the graveyard and read headstones.

The Old Man knew nothing of the domed society. Either his parents were survivors of the war or had been runners; however, this fact is never clearly revealed. As a fan of the movie, I choose to believe his parents were survivors who never heard of the domed society. His parents taught him to read and write and he understood The Capitol belonged "to the people."

If there is a remake, I hope they better develop the Old Man.

reply

I think he was a survivor brcause he has a very vague knoeledge of precatastrophe american history.

reply

Agreed. Also, he kept remarking that his parents had told him pretty much everything. If they had been runners, they would have told him about the dome as well.

reply

I think he was also a metaphor or a religious symbol. Teaching the couple about life, love and death.
He seems a very simple man who has obviously been on his own for a long time. At one point he refers to himself as "beloved son" and there is something child like about him.
It's as if he's their son, but also their teacher. And it does feel as if the 2 are reborn as well.
So all in all rather confusing!

In a literal sense, I would say he is possibly the last survivor of the outside City. Although of course there could be others scattered about!

reply

He got the knowledge of history from books - where he got his poetry. But there was no evidence of any runners getting to Washington, so presumably he was the last survivor of possibly many living in the outside world.
