LB Abbotts effects are usually very good...

but the city looked like such a tabletop model that it was embarrassing

It was. Matte paintings used for the Washington shots were pretty good so perhaps that technique should have been used for the city shots.

When you look at the beautiful and timeless matte shots in Forbidden Planet from 20 years earlier, LR's effects seem ham-fisted.

I'm not sure if Mr. Abbott had any creative input on it, but Box's face was downright funny. It looked exactly like what it was: Something like aluminum foil plastered to Roscoe Lee Brown's face.

I don't even know enough to know how much I don't know. Ya know?

I agree about the model for the city. When I first saw the movie in '76 my first impression of it was that it reminded me of the model of the city scape on display as you exited The Carousel of Progress ride they use to have at Disneyland.

On a funny note, the re-used the Logan's Run city model as the Orkan landscape in a few episodes of Mork and Mindy.

Jesus is the Son of God and my Lord and savior. Pretty cool.
