Same economic plot hole as Hunger Games.

This society has the technology to physically "transport" people to other people's apartments then they must have the technology to create enough food and basic neccessities for everyone, and don't have to keep the population controlled. Just like the creation of the muttations in the Hunger Games. The basic economic problem (limited resources; unlimited wants) has been solved.

You're right, but such inconsistencies exist in many such stories. The internal logic breaks down and it brings into question the rest of the plot.

As I've said elsewhere, the movie can't be watched for its ideas. Go to the book for that and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
