Deleted scenes:Canadian TV version

Any truth to the rumours that a Canadian TV version was broadcast in the 1980`s with all the missing footage? The trivia states the scenes were lost during a purge at MGM.

The deleted scenes as they were struck, and processed, were given away or put away somewhere. I don't know if the elements to the scenes themselves were actually destroyed. Truth is there is a lot of material that is traded or stocked away or kept somewhere. We may never see it but it's there.

This picture was quite grand in it's heyday and still stands as a great MGM motion picture. Unfortunately, the millennials who do not appreciate a great Science Fiction film that applies philosophy and social anxiety to it's base of narration have made it all but impossible for any studio to endeavor the task of processing new footage of the negatives, the scenes, a new print (which is sorely needed), et al.

I can't speak accurately on the matter, but it is my opinion that the original 132 minute print of the film (which was shows in San Diego as a sneak Preview in May of 1976) possibly and probably is sitting in a vault somewhere. And it would have had to have been from an interpositive or answer print - which would mean the color would still be nice if stored properly and accordingly. We can hold out hope - it's just a matter of somebody putting forth the money to make all of this happen.

Studios are really cheap now. The millennials have seized the audience population and now govern the decisions on whether a film like "Logan's Run" or some such will get the accolades of home video release as with Blu Rays, special features, and further, out in NY or LA, where there are repertory screenings of such cinema, where new 35mm or 70mm prints would be very welcome and lauded. Alas, they treat these films with nonchalance and create DCPs of existing DVD/Blu Ray transfers which don't attribute to any great viewing experience such as the film versions would have.

To answer the question - I too have heard that there was a Canadian TV version - and if this was the case, someone needs to research and find out which station broadcast the TV cut, and find out where the 16mm Broadcast print went. That's a start.

I think there are some online sites that have SOME of the footage not seen on disc or in the deleted scenes. As interesting as it's existance is, I didn't think those parts helped the story at all.

reply

You didn't think...?

Were you one of the lucky, the few, who were in attendance that fateful day in 1976 in San Diego...?

reply

I mean, things are cut from movies usually because they don't move the story. None of the stuff I watched were deal breakers in any way.... I'm happy with the final theatrical cut.

I was not in SD 1976, but there have been things released on the web
here's one of them
http://nemsworld.com/logan/video/video.htm

probably some more out there http://www.oocities.org/area51/Dimension/5357/lost.htm

I think there were two OTHER runner sequences filmed for the front of the movie, but the final one they went with explained the characters enough that extra runners getting gunned down didn't aid the story.

As a fan, I love seeing cut scenes from movies, but TO ME, rarely are those scenes needed to make the film better. But that is probably because I learned to love the original film first. :)

I've seen the unedited Logan`s Run in Canada. If memory serves me correctly, this version was broadcasted for the Saturday late afternoon movie once or twice a year. The time-frame was during late 70s to early or even mid 80s. This version had more footage than the Special Advance Preview print and formatted for television. Below, simply one example I remember well-enough. This entire scene is not present in the Official Theatrical Cut.

Happy turn:
The 2ND WOMAN was trimmed-out from the SAP according to fan research from Virtual Vikki.
The 2ND WOMAN in pink-orange on the left was present in the Canadian unedited TV version.

FRANCIS
and that's my friend, Logan.
(as she acknowledges
the introduction)
We're celebrating his next in line.
Carousel - Arcade - who knows?
Want to come along?

WOMAN (smiles, shakes her head)
Only if I make it to the top of
Carousel.
(she holds up her hand)
Thirty -- and the big spin.

In her palm the crystal blinks, red, black. Francis nods, gives her
a half-squeeze.
FRANCIS
You're thirty -- already? I always
thought I was older than you -
(beat)
Well, give it a good try.

WOMAN (pleasantly)
You know I always have.

Another beautiful WOMAN joins them.

2ND WOMAN (to the first)
Sorry I won't be at Carousel tonight.
It's my Love-Shop turn.

WOMAN
That's all right. Happy turn.

2ND WOMAN
You'll renew. I've got a feeling.

WOMAN (smiles)
So do I...but if I don't at least I'll
have the ultimate thrill. I'd almost
rather have that than renew.

2ND WOMAN
I feel the same way. Sometimes I think
I'm not even going to try and renew when
my time comes. But -- that's three years away.
So long.

The 2nd Woman walks away.

FRANCIS (after a beat;
to first Woman)
It's been nice.

WOMAN
Um-huh.

They look briefly and then she turns away. Francis takes Logan's arm
and they move off.

FRANCIS
I guess you never had her?

Logan shakes his head.

FRANCIS
You missed something special.

My best recollection as to what station it was is ITV Edmonton Channel 13 Cable 8. ITV was an independent station that joined Albertan airwaves with CTV plus the English and one French CBC channel in 1974. ITV became part of Global Television Network in 2000. I believe they still operate the original studio and broadcasting centre. ITV was once the goto channel for Sci-Fi themed programming on weekend afternoons.

What happened with the movies in the old days was distributors typically submitted films to the Canadian CRTC unedited or uncut. The CRTC was very relaxed back then plus a bit on the lazy-side and usually didn't snip out anything from movies. Requested prints or videotapes of could still be edited for television by whichever station doing the actual broadcasting. I heard all this discussed once on an ancient radio-show in mind-numbing detail.

CTV broadcasted Logan`s Run for the TV premiere; although, I think it was a kind of time-shifted simulcast of the CBS cable feed/US TV edit with CTV filling in the commercial slots. The CBC rarely broadcast popular or recent Hollywood movies back then. Most likely it was ITV and especially when it came to re-airing slightly older movies often. I also watched Saturn 3 somewhat unedited and about certain as memory allows it was on ITV too.

Love to see the movie studio find a copy someday soon.

That`s really interesting info, thanks for posting.A scene has always bugged me in the film where Jessica takes Logan to her friends and Logan betrays her by relaying the information to his headquarters on his communicator.Does she realize he was responsible for killing all her friends?Somewhere along the way of course he falls in love with her and maybe decides to keep this quiet.Always wondered if there was a "confrontation" scene which was deleted.

reply

Yes and it was the infamous "Ice Statue" scene wherein Box sculpts a statue to the likeness of Logan and Jessica holding eachother. During this, he confesses to Jessica what he did. Feeling remorse, he tells her that he has feelings he doesn't understand - what we the audience understand to be him falling in love with her. She understands him and forgives him, and they kiss before Box finishes the statue. The scene is on youtube i audio form.

Thanks very much.

It's among my all-time favorites, too. And just for that, I'm sharing a Candy Cane/Easter Egg I don't believe has come-up before.

In Logan's apartment scene, there is not only one, but two 1970s Drive-In B-Movie Queens. Candice Rialson as the Laughing Party Woman and along-side her as the Screamer Party Woman is Cheryl 'Rainbeaux' Smith.

When Francis shouts, "Logan, gimmie my screamer back!" he's referring to Cheryl's character. Plus, screenwriter David Zelag Goodman is personally tipping his hat (a callback) to Cheryl. She previously played his 'screamer' in Farewell, My Lovely (1975).

There is also seemingly a bit of reprise and even response in Cheech & Chong's comedy Up In Smoke (1978). Except, Cheryl plays Candice's part of the Laughing Party Woman/Laughing Lady.

It reminds me of a line in Brian DePalma's Phantom of the Paradise (1974), "Do I look like a kidder?" Which in part, is also referring to an ex-girlfriend of Brian's, plus star of his film Sisters (1973) Margot Kidder.

She's been added to the uncredited cast. Candice's role description has been updated to be more accurate and should show soon.
