An unkempt, undisciplined, unmade bed masterpiece

Shots and scenes are unforgettable come and go and come back with flashes of acting genius and WTF moments followed by moments of pathos and social comment. Examples of problems (for me) were minor details such as the sideburns and hair of the actual male actors (too long) and the body language and speech patterns of the characters were too modern and 70's...as well as the dialogue. That scene with Tony Curtis filming a scene with his shirt off would never happen at the time (even after Gable took his shirt off in It Happened One Night, 1933). But the direction, production design, costumes and exposition is excellent and as ha been said before, the contrast between old pros like Milland, Curtis and Mitchum....and DeNiro and Nicholson...is exciting to watch.
