name of the song
could someone tell me the name of the song that was played when the general arrived at the hospital? thanks
shareIt was "Es zittern die morschen Knochen" (The rotten bones are trembling) by Hans Baumann. The bit I remember hearing was the chorus:
Wir werden weiter marschieren
Wenn alles in Scherben fällt,
Denn heute da hört uns Deutschland
Und morgen die ganze Welt.
(We will continue to march,
Even if everything shatters;
Because today Germany hears us,
And tomorrow, the whole World.)
I had to look the song up, but apparently it was a famous Nazi anthem. This is in contrast to the songs sung by Steiner and his men at the front - the "Westerwaldlied", and "Im Feldquartier, auf hartem Stein" (which Maag plays on his harmonica) - which are folk/soldiers' songs, with no political or ideological overtones.
