Whats the name of that song they sing for Lt. Meyers birthday party?
Was it a genuine contemporary German song or something made up for the movie?

It was the Westerwaldlied ("O, du schöner Westerwald"). It's a well-known German folk song. It was popular as a marching song with the German armies in WWII, and I believe the German forces still sing it today. It crops up in quite a few war films. (I remember it being in "Das Boot", for one.) You'll find it on YouTube, and there's a wikipedia article on it.
