Tate/Polanski house

I´ve never seen this title, but I´ve learned that they never used the Tate/Polanski house in the movie (learned it in the "Trivia section", but still, they´ve put Bel Air on "movie locations" for Tate/Polanski house. Did they shot exterior shots of the house? Or did they just use another house in Bel Air?

The house was actually there until 1994. Trent Reznor of NIN was the last tennant. He rented it, recorded most of The Downward Spiral in the house and shot an entire music video in 1993 for the song "Gave Up" which featured a young, make-up free, same-colored-eyes Marilyn Manson. After Trent moved out, they demolished it.

Are you sure it wasn't longer?
I was in Los Angeles in January, 1995, on a business trip. I was in the area and I drove up Cielo Drive. If I recall correctly, there was a house on the property. Since I only drove by, I didn't notice if how old it was. There was a sign on the lawn (something like "private property, keep off") and I noticed that the house number had changed (from 10050 to 10048).

This is all from memory some 11 years later.

Well....if it's a different address...it wouldn't be the same property now would it? I don't know if they built anything in it's place, I just know that Reznor was the last to occupy it, and when he vacated, it was torn down.

Hi Bright,
Yes, there is a huge house there now. It can be seen on the internet; try www.charliemanson.com. The address was changed because of the notoriety (sp?) of 10050. I have read that local Real Estate Agents can't get it sold.

reply

The LaBiancas' house address has also been changed. Same property.

Okay then. I can admit when I'm wrong. The addresses were changed. Makes sense. Thanks for posting the correct info. I would have checked myself...but it's a little harder when you're on the wrong coast :-)

Here is a picture of the Tate house property as it looks today. The old house was torn down. It is now a nice mansion with a beautiful view. But it would still be scary to live there.

Here is another angle from the front. You can see the driveway where Steven Parent was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That's right, its probably the tree at the far left of this photo of the old Tate house. That tree was present on one of the most evil nights in history, 8/9/69.

I agree, the mansion is a monstrosity. The old house actually was very nice. It had been built in the 1940s. Sharon fell in love with it the moment she saw it. It's too bad such hideous murders occurred there and the house was torn down years later. It may sound a bit silly but it wasn't the house's fault the murders were committed.

I LOVED the landscaping of the old house, and the ranch style. I agree, the new house is a monstrocity(sp)...but the old energy needed to be cleared away. Still, I would not want to live on the grounds.

I loved the style and landscaping of the old house and this new one is just such a monstrosity. If the murders had never have happened the old house would have been a great house to live in, but there is no way I would want to live in that house given its history. Honestly, it would even be weird to live in any house on that property. Besides the fact that the new house is just too ostentatious for words that is another reason why I can understand why the new house has never sold.

reply

I was thinking it looked more like the tree in the middle.

reply

Isn't that the approximate location too (by that tree), where Gibby was found?

reply

The house in the photos on page two of the thread looks different to the Tate house and the gaudy mess that's there now. Is that just because I haven't seen the front of the new one clearly enough until now? Was work still in progress when the pictures were taken? I think you can see the area where the guesthouse was and there seems to be different foundations to the house than in the days of the original Tate house; Looks like there may be a carpark under the house as someone said.

And is the twin house now a twin of the new house?

reply

I saw the property in 1983. You could not see it from Cielo drive, there was short service road that curved back and there was 10090, 10070 and then a large gate at the end of the service road (no number by it). I got out of my car and looked in the gate and saw a guy watering a garden. It was definitely the house pictured in the book and definitely not the house used in the movie. I drove by there again in 1998 and the area is totally different now - doesn't even look the same and that service road no longer exists. I took a photo of the gate and compared it with the picture in the book and it was definitely the same place. The gate itself was changed but the trees, wall, and utility wires/lines were exactly the same. I'll post the photo if I can find/scan it again.

Yes, the original Tate house was torn down several years ago. Also, the numerical addresses of both houses were altered slightly by request of the current owners to avoid the notariety connected to the murders. The La Bianca house is still there (with no security gate to keep out gawkers either!!).

I went up there in 1983 - you could not see the house or the property from the road.

The original Tate house is gone, but there is a "twin" house that is also on Cielo that looks like the original house, but it is a little smaller. It is located below the original Tate location. This website has pictures of the twin house.

That large mansion was built by Jeff Franklin who produced full house. It has a huge underground car garage.

I don't think that's who lives there. Have any of you seen the show Ghost Hunters on SCI-FI? In an episode last season or two seasons ago they were asked to go to the site of the original house and investigate any paranormal happeneings. The guy that owns the property now, and who was still in the process of remodeling it, was pretty young. I think if you did Full House you'd have to be a bit older, It's been off the air for over 10 years.

reply

That is not the old tate property. That guy lives down the street and his name is David. I did a movie with him a few years ago. The real property is at the end of the street. At the time of the murders his was not built. It was only built a few years ago.

reply

Someone does have the original door to the original house. I can't remember, something is telling me Rob Zombie has it.

reply

trent reznor has it, in his old recording in new orleans.

reply

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know if the "twin" house is still there? I looked on Google Maps and on Bing Maps, but I couldn't see it. It looks like where it was there is another smaller Mediterranean style house.

While working in the music industry in the mid-80's, I lived in the guesthouse of the property. The ONLY thing that had been altered since the murders of August 1969 was the color of the wood trim on all of the buildings.

The entire property was demolished in June 1994, with the exception of the tall fir tree that Abigail Folger died beneath.

The only reason I can think of for why the actual house was never used in the 1976 Made for TV film, "Helter Skelter", is that Rudy Alltobelli, who owned the 3 acre property since sometime around 1963, really went out of his way to disassociate the house from ANYTHING to do with Manson.

BTW, the street number you quote, 10048, was never for "that" house; it was for the house that sat below the originally numbered 10050 Cielo. 10048 was the address for what was known as the "Twin House", built at the same time in the 1940's by architect Robert Bird. The murder house's number was changed from 10050 to 10066 Cielo Drive.

Try Google Earth and, when you locate the HUGE mansion sitting where the murder house once sat, look down the front hillside and you'll see the "twin"; which is NOW a twin of the ugly mansion that took the place of Sharon Tate's "Love House".

reply

Thanks, Kennedy. Interesting the houses have remained twins. The "50" now being "66" reminds me of triple six and Rosemary's Baby. I wonder how the numbering scheme is determined under such circumstances.

OMG! I have a friend who lived in the guesthouse at one time, too! They said the property and the main house were extremely lovely, and filled with light. They also said in general, there wasn't a creepy feeling about the house at all. The only scary thing was people would sometimes jump the fence and start investigating the grounds and peering in the windows while you were just sitting there, sipping coffee...hopefully, dressed (!) And once, red paint was poured all over the mailbox in the middle of the night.

Interestingly, they said hardly anyone ever used the pool...even though it was sitting right there.

Mr. Alltobelli had been offered multi-millions of dollars to sell the house over the years many times, but always declined....then when he finally did sell it decades later, he had to settle for a much smaller amount due to various circumstances. I guess in real estate, timing is everything.
