Not bad considering it was pre dating DNA Seems they had to piece things together using circumstantial evidence, witness turns state evidence and motive based on the White Album.

That was a typo it should say 1976

Do you know that you can edit out the typo?

Also, wasn't this more like 1969 (the murders)? Maybe 1970 (the actual trial)?

In real life, that is.

Just the film was 1976.

Read the book. They had quite a bit of evidence but it took a great deal of hard work to pull it all together. They also had the confession of Susan Atkins. The murders took place in 1969 and the initial trials and verdicts were concluded in 1971.
