Todd AO

For a "low budget" movie they sure had great technical credits. This epic was shot in Todd AO - the super widescreen lens system ("Cinerama Outta One Hole" as Mike Todd memorably described it). Sound of Music, Oklahoma, and Patton all used it ,and that's why the opening 5 minutes of the film are brilliant - when we zoom through the gloriously vast wilderness in the helicopter, through giant trees, down a river & clean over a mountaintop. I saw it on my little 2 foot TV & I was blown away!
So why is the rest of the movie so crappy looking?

They switched to 35mm in the 70's when 70MM print demand dropped. (Now they're a sound lab only). The lens was the same, and still famous enough to rate a BIG credit right at the head of the film.
