This was the first R movie I saw.
That's right first R movie.
shareIt isn't rated R. It's PG.
The old, horrible DVD from Nutech/DVD Ltd./Liberty/whatever had it listed as being R, but Grizzly is rated PG.
Yup--it's PG but I can understand someone thinking it was R. According to the audio commentary on the film they wanted to give it an X originally for the violence! The producer fought them for it and did edit ot slightly and got the PG. Still it was VERY bloody for a PG movie (not that I'm complaining):)
shareI'm almost certain David Sheldon was BS-ing about that... I mean, I could definitely see an R, but X? Nah... not like there was anything pornographic about the movie.
I will admit though, the PG rating did shock me a bit. I remember seeing it on the box and thinking "Really? This cover looks like it belongs to an R rated film!" then I popped it in, expecting it to be relatively bloodless.. then the scene with the flying arm and bear beatdown happened.
Definitely not one of the goriest movies ever, or of its time (not like it's The Burning Moon or the Guinea pig movies, or something of that nature) but still some pretty cool gore scenes in it. The part with the kid caught me completely off-guard.
Back then some films WERE given an X just for violence. It was rare but it happened. I believe "I Eat Your Skin" got an X for that. Maybe the ratings board was just trying to scare Sheldon by threatening him with an X if he didn't cut it. Also it was a small independent film and the ratings board come down heavily on those. "Blue Valentine" was originally given an NC-17 (for no real reason) but it was quickly changed to an R when the Weinstein Company threatened legal action!
shareI was surprised this was rated "PG" too, then remembered there was no "PG-13" rating at the time. I doesn't deserve an "R", now or then, but it would certainly get a "PG-13" if it was released now.
shareHonestly man, I just can't see the MPAA giving Grizzly an X. An R for sure, but X? I mean... the death scenes are pretty violent, but there aren't any graphic disembowelings or decapitations (aside from that brief shot of the horse head). Probably Sheldon hyping.
shareSeeing the movie again--you're right. An R sure but not an X. Maybe Sheldon has a bad memory. After all this came out over 30 years ago.
shareMe too...my grandfather took me and my aunt to see this and it scared the beejezus out of me. I was only 6 years old!! What was he thinking LOL? My aunt was 13 so it was obviously her idea to go. I remember vividly the blood splatter across the cabin when the first of those girls was killed, the lady about the waterfall and of course the horse decapitation. I would love to see this movie again to see if it was as scary as I remember. My mom was so mad that he took me to see this b/c I slept with her and my dad for about two weeks afterwards (our back yard was wooded).
share...as far as "X" for Violence, there were some films, such as Brian DePalma's "Scarface" that were awarded "X" ratings, for violence, but then edited 9 seconds (or some such) to get back to "R" since an X/NC-17 Rating is death at the box office.
shareLMAO!!!! I was 9 y/o when my parents took me to see this!!! I had an adjoining bathroom with my parents and my dad snored...So....I spent a few sleepless nights thinking my mom was being eaten by a grizzly but too scared to go save her....good times....

I was only 11 when my dad took the whole family out for movie night. When the opening titles started, with the scenes of endless, rolling forest accompanied by a majestic orchestral score, I was thinking, oh great, I have to endure an hour and a half of another of my dad's boring nature documentaries. Then the body parts started flying... Best Nature Documentary Ever!!!
shareIt being PG is the reason I kept putting off watching it for so long. Much to my delight, it was deliciously gory and violent. I loved it.
It's a sad thing that your adventures have ended here
I saw this movie several times on showtime in the 70's and just last night I saw it again thanks to the shriek 2 disc love. While it's violent, it is nowhere close to being "R" even when I saw it back in 1977. In other words (IMO) it has never been edited and what you see now is pretty much the same *beep* we saw in the theaters back then. It's PG (or maybe PG13 now).
sharei was 9 years old when this movie came out but somehow convinced my mother that it was something on the order of "The Wilderness Family"...Ha!!!
I remember when the girl gets decapitated and the head rolls through the grass my mom yanked me by the arm and dragged my ass right outta there...
Oh well i tried...
I saw it a year later on the TV broadcast and owned the VHS for years.. I will always have a soft spot for this film...
I'm pretty damn sure it WAS R-rated, regardless of any "research" anyone might has done. I saw it when I was 12 in the theater, we snuck in. Back then R-rated movies were real popular, especially with the teenagers and pre-teens. If it was PG "it sucked", if it was G, its sucked even more. Usually. The Enforcer was rated R. It had far less gore, and what, boobs? The Fury was rated R.
