Pure fiction.
I just finished reading TEHL and boy, there are some differences. Too bad the movie didn't follow the book more closely. Interesting minor characters and subplots were left out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and so I tried the novel and enjoyed it almost as much. I have read a few Jack Higgins works, by no means many.
Much later I came across the sequel, and I thought it was rubbish. JH must have been late with a tax bill or something and needed to turn out something really fast. I will specify one fault only. He resorts to filling his pages by constantly telling us what the character does with his cigarette. . .(lights, sucks, taps on box, crushes out . . etc, etc, etc)
I stress that I have enjoyed some Jack Higgins books, one about a teacher in slum schools (not a thriller) was particularly good, but the sequel to Eagle was awful. I dont remember the name and dont want to.
cheers Ivan
I agree with ianprl- "The Eagle Has Flown" was a second-rate pot boiler, certainly not up to Higgin's best work. I'd like to see "Solo" made into a film. I enjoyed the film TEHL a great deal, and thought the cast was well-chosen.
shareTotally agree. The eagle has landed was great WW2-fiction, while the the sequel was totally crappy.
shareApparently, there was a theoretical plan around the Germans speculated on, but never put into practice. I've heard it mentioned on several WWII documentaries.
Just as the beginning of the movie, it was probably some wild scheme that Hitler ranted about for awhile, and then dropped.
The movie just takes the idea, and pushes it further. Great "what if" senario!
Education is what's left when you forget what you were taught.
The theoretical plan was probably in the same sort of stage as the plan Operation Sealion, the invasion of England, which was also given up. The Germans forgot about the plans when A) They realised they couldn't beat the RAF, and B) When Hitler decided to attack the USSR instead.
That's some bad hat, Harry
There is a similar plot to Philip Kerr "Hitler`s Peace" - a high quality read. Recommended reading
