Why didn't the americans and british troops expose the real identy of the look alike Churchill and let the germans capture him fill him with phony info and shorten the war?

reply

Who would volunteer for such a mission? :) He would probably be thrown into a KZ-camp when it was discovered that he was a phoney.

Actually the allies did do something in the direction of that when they planted some fake documents on a unidentified body which was fitted with a high ranking uniform and placed on the French or Italian coast. The documents were about the D-day landings and how the major bridgeheads would be near Calais in order to trick the Germans.

Because the plan ends up not to capture Churchill, but to kill him. Steiner (Caine), doesn't try to kidnap "Churchill" at the end. He just shoots him. It's turned into a fatal suicide mission.

Because Churchill, Roosevelt AND Stalin were all at the Tehran Conference at the time, as Dennis Lill's character revealed to Treat Williams at the end, and it was remotely possible they could have all been killed or even captured if the Germans found out about it somehow.
