Two dead men on the converted E-Boat

When Robert Duvall first met Michael Caine on the quay on Alderney what was with those two dead guys?

Were they German sailors who had been shot by the British while they were out at sea or were they British Commandos (they had bare feet and seemed to have wet suits) or was it something different?

Thanks

They were dead german sailors, thats why caine and his men had been sent there, they were being engaged by british naval and air units, while on patrols, and being heavily outnumbered and outgunned by the royal navy thus it was seriously deadly, they probaly hoped caine and his men would be killed of sharpish as a punishment

I seem to remember the book had Steiner's men sent to train as midget submarine operators...a high fatality part of the military and therefore used as cannon fodder.

Hungerhill is correct. The book did have Steiner's men sent to train as midget submarine operators.
