Steiner's second in command, who was injured and went with him to the escape boat?

i have not read the book its based on, but I read somewhere he is one of the few that gets away.

Gets away? To where? The final shot of the movie is of the boat grounded on the beach and clearly not going anywhere any time soon.

Nothing. You saw the film. He is never mentioned again. Why does it matter?
