Hilarious!
The 70s/80s-ness of this movie and the inclusion of O.J. Simpson, Martin Sheen, and Ava Gardener makes this movie a real treat. This is the kind of movie I'd like to see done on Cinematic Titanic. It really gets you going from the very first scene of a hospital infiltration, up to the very ending credits with the almost inappropriately cheerful tender love theme. Thank you, TCM. Thank you for showing me a film that was almost as much fun to watch as it was to riff on.
The film rolls on from one plot point to the other and is quite thrilling, I thought. It's got a cast of goofy, eccentric characters, from the Doctor with Peter Davis's hair, to Grampa Joe's exciting albeit brief chase with a scalpel. Then there's the ending, a montage of jumpcuts and bizarre facial contortions that render the disaster goofy instead of horrifying, and completely destroy any dignity of the dead.
I can just picture this movie as something Joel and the bots would be subjected to, except that it wasn't a bad movie, it just had those beats in it that you could expect a riff on.
