Alida Valli and Lee Strasberg

Nice to see such illustrious figures in this film.

This movie proved that Lee Strasberg can act. His performance was especially moving. Especially when he kept saying he didn't want to go back to Poland.

He certainly earned his reputation as an acting teacher.

Mr . Strasberg provided some of the best acting in the film. Its a shame that Alida Valli wasn't more prominent.

Could you describe some scenes with Alida Valli? I can't picture her in the movie. Her IMDb photos are of her much younger, so I can't visualize her as an older woman.

She is the older woman with the glasses, apparently the mother of Katerina, the annoying little girl.

Oh, OK, thanks scruffy58. That character stood out for me because she had zero chemistry with the little girl. She was more like a nanny who didn't like children than a mother.

OJ had a lot more chemistry with the child.

What you say is very true. Ms. Valli's character looked a little long in the tooth to be her mother, so perhaps she was her grandmother or even, as you suggested, her nanny. During the final moments of the battle on the train, the girl is seen wandering through the chaos whimpering something that sounds like "Nonny". I can never quite make it out. Perhaps a familiar form of 'gramma' or 'nanny' perhaps?

She was the girl's nanny - at one point, after Burt Lancaster makes the announcement over the radio into the train's PA system about the service not stopping at Basel and Paris(surely there would be more stops, obviously no route knowledge here!!), Alida Valli says 'Mummy and Daddy are going to be very cross about this!' which, later on with the girl Katerina crying for her saying what sounds like 'Nanny!' tells me this.

And in Robert Katz's novelisation, she was known as Mrs Chadwick, the nanny.

Excellent! Thank you so much for clearing that up!
