I've seen this movie many times, and in every version I've seen, the tuxedo renting scene is the same. The three guys are standing in front of the mirror talking and suddenly the film speeds up for maybe 5 or 6 seconds, then goes back to normal. I've never been able to find an explanation for this, and I've never seen a version of this movie without this flaw. Anyone have any insight on it?
shareI always thought it was a De Palma joke. We don't really need to hear every line those boys are making in their tuxedo debate, and the speeded-up effect turns a filler scene into a comic one. The camera speed would have to be deliberately manipulated in principal photography for this to work. Pauline Kael gave a wildly rapturous review for Carrie in "76, but she singled out the tuxedo scene as a "dumb toy effect."

shareThis scene really takes me out of the atmosphere that is the other half of this movie. Im looking forward to that prom scene, but i can see why this has been remade a few times now
shareIt’s intentional and it’s just supposed to add to the silliness of the scene.
shareWatching it on TV as a kid, I always thought it was some kind of TV edit to cut out a curse word or allow more time for commercials.
