Let's Get this Straight (the deleted scenes)

Danny Devito and Brooke Adams did not appear in the theatrical release of "Car Wash". They have appeared in various television versions however. Since so much was edited out for television, and the fact that the movie is rather short, the extra scenes were added in the television version. So you see, DVD versions without Devito are the original versions. BTW, I didn't care for the Devito scenes anyway.

Personally, I liked the DeVito scenes as it offered a balance to the prostitute's longing to reconnect with her "joe." At 97 minutes, the movie is too short, in my opinion. It's one of the movies that reminds me so much of the 70's that I'm always disappointed when it's over.

I like the DeVito scenes too, they soften the harder edges of the film. Infact I like the TV version over-all much better than the one on DVD.

I agree with Siriry and Barry-Brodsky. And the DeVito-Adams subplot helps tie up some loose ends. I'm guessing it was originally supposed to be in the theatrical release and was cut for time. Let's see a DVD with Danny, Brooke AND the nasty language!!

Danny and his wife weren't the only ones who got cut out. For those of
you who remember the original version, Marsha gets asked out by some
sleazy guy but the "date" scene has been cut out of the current
version.

reply

Oh man. Why not just cut all the scenes and just play the music?

The film has a lot going for it as an "ensemble" movie if they let it run its course and stop messing with it. I know a lot of things go into how to market, etc. etc. but in this case they've thrown out the baby....you know the rest.

Some slick (good looking) guy in a convertable comes to the carwash, starts talking with Marsha and asks her what time she gets off work and says he'll be back then. Of course Marsha thinks he wants a date with her and is really excited telling everyone "I've got a date". When he comes back to pick her up he pulls up in his car with his arm around some smooth gal and tells Marsha to hop in the backseat. In the back there sits some butt ugly guy, the one who Marsha's date is really with. As they leave the guys decide to "go right to the motel"...poor Marsha, as they drive off she just looks resigned and sad. All this is in the edited version shown on American TV but not on the DVD.

I love the jealous DeVito scenes as well. I thought the unattractive guy in the back seat was part of the full film. I love watching this movie on a dateless Friday night...
