Car Wash Site Still There?

Any LA people stop by 3rd and Rampart to see if the car wash is still there?

reply

According to the trivia section the car wash where this was filmed was torn down in the eighties.

Check Google Earth or mapquest. I don't think the car wash is still there.

reply

torn down a long time ago

It's 6th and Rampart. And, the wash is no longer there. Check the link below for the satellite pic (the former location is on the lower right corner of 6th and Rampart):

If you click on the "street view" option, it will give you a better idea.

Hi folks! Me and some buddies are in Los Angeles for the world baseball classic and we swear that the car wash is located on temple & virgil in Los Angeles. The area looks very similar to the area in Car Wash. Write back and tell me what you think!

6th and Rampart and it's no longer there. In the film you can actually see a street signs identifying 6th Street.

There are still a lot of car washes in this general style (exposed metal beams, CAR WASH in big letters) all over the greater LA area. Do a search on "googie car washes," and you'll find them. Search on Flickr; they have lots of photos of Googie car washes.

I remember when the movie was being filmed. I would drive past there on my way to and from work. It was actually called Robert Taylor's Car Wash
(I don't know if it was owned by THE Robert Taylor) and one day I noticed that a new sign was up reading Dee-luxe Car Wash so I figured the place had been sold. Later, I would see the camera crews but it wasn't until much later after the picture was released that I made the connection.

So I wanted to see it and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a patchwork, much like American Graffiti (1973), of characters and storylines stitched together by music and a disc jockey, and I liked it very much.

The car wash is long gone. I remember the diner across from the lot and the little hot dog stand but never went to eat at either place and I think they are gone as well.

Workin' at the Car Wash -- Yeah!

The car wash site is now a strip mall; Al's Coffee Shop is now a Chinese restaurant, but the Big 6 Market is still there with the same sign.

Real estate. No space for history.

I remember the Big 6. That was across from the Dog House. The hotel at the opposite end on Wilshire, I see that place these days used in TV shows.

So there really was a diner there? Sometimes movies rent a vacant space for a few days for the film and will decorate it and everything. In the movie it was called 5 spot diner. Was that the actual name?

You can see "Al's Diner" and "Chit Chat club" across the street. They are gone and there is something else there.

The exact address of the car wash was 610 S Rampart and there is a strip mall there with a Subway and a place called Pescado something.

Of course, it's been a long while for me now, but I am quite sure it was a diner. Makes sense to make use of existing locales to the keep the budget down on a movie with so many acting parts.

The Dog House was there for a long time, too, and as much as I enjoy a good dog, I never stopped to eat there (Tommy Burgers was not far from there, you understand, and given the choice, Tommy's beat all other joints except the Pup n' Taco across the street from them. Pup n' Taco served up a pretty good pastrami sandwich on the cheap).

The Hot dog was called the Dog House and it was at 2614 West 6th Street. It's now gone but the locale is listed here

It's definitely 6th and Rampart. Just found it on Google Earth. Try the "Street View" as well. Tha 6th market is still there just like somebody posted!

It's now a strip-mall with an Escado Mojado on the 6th street end. Fun to go there and look around. You can even see the ASBURY hotel or whatever that is. Sign's still up! And looking West on 6th, you can see the Arco towers (now called something else.)
