How/when is power belt activated?

I just watched the The Starships Are Coming episode where Dianna is tied up. I was surprised that she does not simply break the restraints once her captors were gone. I have read in earlier posts that the key to her power is in the belt. In this episode as Wonder Woman, she tosses around several guys like rag dolls, so I'm guessing that the power belt is activated when she spins into WW and/or activating the power belt causes her to become WW.

It's been a while since I saw that particular episode, but I'm assuming she's tied up as Diana Prince. Once she spins into WW, the belt automatically gives her her superhuman strength--she doesn't have to consciously activate it, the way Green Lantern has to conscious make his power ring create something.

While the series only examined two situations--"WW is wearing the belt" or "the belt has been taken from WW"--I don't think they ever established what would happen if she were just holding it in her hands.

reply

Yes, in this episode, she is tied up as Diana and some kid gets her loose. I am assuming that Diana/WW always is wearing the belt but it is not activated until she spins into WW. However, if there is an episode where Diana is walking around wearing a bikini, for instance, w/o the belt and then spins into WW, that would disprove that theory.

reply

No, Diana's belt is kept wherever the rest of her costume is kept when she's not Wonder Woman--it doesn't appear until she actually transforms. She doesn't wear her costume under her street clothes, like Superman; the costume magically appears, like Shazam.

In one of the episodes in the first season (I can't remember which one), the villain rips off her belt, she is strapped to an upright table, someone manages to get the belt from the villain and throws it to WW, she catches it in her hand and her superpowers come back and she frees herself.

Yes...that happens in Season 1, Episode 3 - Fausta, The Nazi Wonder Woman. It shows basically that the belt doesn't have to be around her waist...she just has to be in contact with it to retain her super powers.

Forgot that one, thanks!

Hi, I think you are referring to Wonder Woman, Season 1 episode 2 titled " "Fausta, the Nazi Wonder Woman" and WW was strapped to an upright " slate " and she did not have her belt or lasso and one of the Nazi men had her lasso and belt and he threw it at WW saying there was nothing special about them and WW caught them as he threw them at her and then she was able to get free from being restrained with long, thick straps of leather, like a belt and once she was free she put her belt back on and continued to fight off 4 men who were Nazi's and then she was in a fight with Fausta, who was supposed to be a very well trained in the Martial Arts and of course Wonder Woman didn't want to fight her so she just kind of pushed her aside and then left in her invisible plane and when she returned to Washington she learned that Steve Trevor went to Germany to rescue Wonder Woman, so then WW went back to Germany in her invisible plane and saved Steve and then Fausta realized she was being used and she turned on her fellow Nazi team and then she helped WW and Steve to get out of a water well that had some water in it but it could be dangerous if one of the men " flipped the switch " which would have sent currents of electricity in and you know that electricity and water don't mix, so Fausta threw her Nazi " leader " into the pit and through WW a rope so WW and Steve could climb out of the well.
During 1/2 of the 1st season Wonder Woman's powers were NOT as strong as they should have been but her strength "evolved" to where if she was in that well she should have been able to jump out of it...she had stronger powers during the 2nd and 3rd season of Wonder Woman.
Anyway I think that is the episode you might have been referring to. If it was, I hope I was able to help you remember it a bit. Here in Chicago, one of Chicago's local stations airs Lynda Carter's "Wonder Woman" reruns at 7:00 pm on Saturday nights. Last night's episode was the last episode of the 1st season, "Wonder Woman in Hollywood " and her sister, Drusilla (Debra Winger ) was sent to Hollywood, with orders from the Queen of the Amazons, who is also Wonder Woman's/ Princess Diana's and Drusilla's Mother, and she went to get Princess Diana to go back to Paradise Island for it's Bi-Millenium (2000th) Anniversary Celebration of when the Amazons had first stepped foot there and it became their " sanctuary. " Then the following beginning of the new seasons of Wonder Woman started in the fall but it went from being on ABC to it being on CBS and they made it that Wonder Woman went back to America during the present time, the mid 70's and her costume had some minor changes to it but her powers in the 2nd and 3rd seasons were much more "advanced " but according to the Comic Books Wonder Woman is said to be as strong as Superman and she can also Fly without her Invisible plane, she is said ti be able to glide on the air currents and that's how she flies like Superman, but I don't think she will be flying like Superman in the WW Feature Movie that is supposed to come out next year, 2017. In a Comic Book story line both Batman and Superman were being brainwashed by Brainiac to kill Wonder Woman and Superman had Wonder Woman in a choke hold an she took off her Tiara and it CUT his hand and that's how she freed herself from Superman and then she went to kill Brainiac and because she killed another "being" from another Planet, she was kicked out of The Justice League. There are TONS of background information of Wonder Woman from the comic books and I'm guessing that is why they were having a difficult time in writing the Wonder Woman Feature Film.
OK, I'm sorry for babbling on...but again, I hope I described the episode you were referring to about Wonder Woman and she not having her powers unless she has her belt and lasso by her holding on to them or while she is wearing them but to my knowledge I think that was the ONLY episode where someone had taken Wonder Womans Belt and Lasso off of her, no WAIT, the episode where Steve went to Texas because an old friend of General Blankenship called to ask for help because someone was stealing his cattle and Wonder Woman went to help Steve and some "thugs" puller her belt and lasso off of her but the man who called and asked for help also took care of war orphans and they helped Wonder Woman escape because she was locked up in a jail cell and the kids picked up a small tree that was but and it had Wonder Woman's Belt and Lasso on it and the kids were able tp break into the place where Wonder Woman was locked up in a jail cell, she arrived in Texas wearing her costume but she kind pf stuck out so she wore a tight red shirt and white leggings, and also her belt and lasso, her bracelets and her Tiara. So there were 2 episodes that O now remember that WW had her belt taken off of her and she wasn't as strong without them, she was just a "normal" everyday woman without her belt and lasso.
OK, now I'm done and again I hope I was able to help answer your question...Have a great Sunday, April 24th, 2016 and summer is coming so wherever you live, have a great summer too !!!
Please excuse any and all typos, it's late, a little after 5:00 am and I need to go to bed, I'm sorry but I am pretty sure everything is pretty easy to read.

The series was a bit inconsistent in that. The belt idea is presented in Fausta, the Nazi Wonder Woman; but, a few episodes later, it is contradicted, in the two-parter The Feminum Mystique (with Wonder Girl). There, it is the Amazonian bracelets that gives them their abilities.

In the comics, Wonder Woman's abilities were natural and shared by all Amazons. However, if she were chained by a man, she would lose her powers. Also, if she were tied by her Golden Lasso, she was forced to obey her captor. Both methods were used to put her in jeopardy, alot! In the 1940s, her series had more bondage than anything Bettie Page modeled! It never made total sense in the comics; but, it was mostly metaphorical, as creator William Moulton Marston meant to show it as women being subjugated by males, which Wonder Woman would throw off, like her Amazonian mother and ancestors did when they freed themselves from the slavery of Hercules (as art of the 12 Labors) when he takes Hyppolite's girdle (belt, not foundation garment).

I think without the bracelets, they just can't deflect bullets, but still have super strength?

reply

That is correct, the only reason the Nazi's were able to take the Amazons prisoner is by gassing them, removing their bracelets and holding them at gunpoint. (seriously, with their strength and speed they could have overtaken them sooner but they used the whole "the Queen is being held hostage to prevent them from trying anything" angle....of course, by all rights she would have been super strong and fast as well and could have easily overtaken Captain Radl by herself without needing a feminum bracelet...but then, there would have been no 2 parter if it were that easy).

reply

Nope; "The Feminum Mystique" shows them as powerless without the bracelets.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

reply

No it doesn't.....Drusilla knocks her captor Mr. Harris single handedly up against the wall of her cell before escaping, and she has no bracelets. The amazons don't need bracelets or the magic belts on Paradise Island. They were being held at gunpoint after their bracelets were taken from them, that was the whole idea.

After Drusilla knocks the guard out on Paradise Island by the Feminum mine, Diana lifts him very easily with no need of bracelets for strength.

They are also shown to have all their athletic prowess and skills during their athletic games & exercises in Part 1 (when Drusilla is introduced)..the "Wonder Jump" is one of those skills and while they are wearing their tournament outfits, none of them are wearing bracelets.

In addition in the pilot ep Diana lifts Steve Trevor up after his plane crash with no bracelets and runs at enhanced speed to the amazon's hospital.

I also recall the Queen telling Diana that the belt is her source of strength away from Paradise Island. So, that would be correct that the amazons don't need to wear a belt for power on the island.
