Was the show for a live 'audience' or a television 'audience'?

When the muppets were doing their acts on stage, was it implied that it was being taped to be shown as a TV show, or was it implied that it was only for a live audience in the theatre, like a musical or play or vaudeville act? I'm not talking about the actual show broadcast to us including the backstage scenes, but the fictional show we were watching being performed on the stage.

Since the Muppets do not exist offscreen, it was taped to be shown as a TV show, obviously. The series just used a laugh track to make it seem like a live audience was watching the show, and even made references/in-jokes about it.

When TDKR comes out on Blu-Ray/DVD, you have my permission to buy.

In fact on occasion they showed the audience who themselves were Muppets.
