How was the show filmed?

When two or more characters who were performed by the same person were in the same sketch how was it done? If Kermit and Rowlf were in the same scene, how did Jim do both characters at the same time? When I was kid I just assumed all the characters were played by different actors!

If you have the season one DVD, there's a Muppet Morsel bonus feature with displayed pop-up facts throughout the episodes. In the Veterinarian's Hospital sketch of the Candice Bergen episode, it explained that when Kermit and Rowlf are in a scene together, Jim Henson would perform the character with the most comedic responsibility. In that case, it would be Rowlf. Another puppeteer would perform Kermit, and lip-sync the pre-recorded audio track.

I was thinking that was probably how they did it. I wonder how often they messed up and forgot which Muppet voice they were supposed to be doing? Did Frank ever start doing Sam when he was supposed to be doing Piggy? That would be hilarious!

Lip-sync? Kermit doesn't have any lips.

If you read more closely, I was referring to the puppeteer who had to make sure Kermit's mouth sync with the audio track.
