Laverne + Garfunkel

I am curious about Penny Marshall's relationship with Art Garfunkel in the mid '80s. I thought they were were an interesting celebrity couple. With all due respect, they were not exactly glamorous. But they had talent and personality.

Garfunkel suffered a tragedy in 1979 when his girlfriend Laurie Bird committed suicide. Garfunkel credits Penny Marshall with helping him through his depression. And they remained friends. Please click on

Penny Marshall suffered her own tragedy. She was dating actor Larry Breeding after her divorce from Rob Reiner. Breeding guested on three episodes of "Laverne & Shirley". He was killed in an automobile accident on the Hollywood Freeway on October 1, 1982. He was only 36 years old.

I remember seeing a picture of Penny Marshall and Art Garfunkel together in a tabloid magazine back in the '80s. The caption should have read "Laverne & Garfunkel". Both had difficult sidekicks who were short and had short dark hair. Penny Marshall got top billing on her TV show. Garfunkel got second billing because Paul Simon wrote their songs. But Garfunkel had a much better voice.

I remember a "Laverne & Shirley" episode when they thought they saw Simon and Garfunkel at a party. But it was only Lenny and Squiggy. HELLO! It was the same episode when they smoked pot then married a couple English musicians so they could become American citizens and avoid oppressive English taxation. That had to be one of the best California episodes, but that isn't saying much.

Hi,
I didn't know that Laverne and Garfunkel had a relationship. Great backstory, thanks. I haven't seen the episode you mentioned, but I know Garfunkel guest starred in a season 5 episode entitled, "The Beatnik Show" (I think that's right). He was one of the club performers, pretty funny.

I just thought of another connection. Carrie Fisher was married to Paul Simon and is very close friends with Penny Marshall. She appeared as a guest on "Laverne & Shirley" for the "The Playboy Show" show episode. Penny and Carrie were trying to get jobs as Playboy bunnies. It seemed there were a lot more guests the final season. It was probably an attempt to fill the void left by Cindy Williams' departure.
