I know a lot of people probably feel the later episodes were weaker than the earlier ones,

I find something to like in all 8 seasons.
I'm watching the 8th season right now and the 2 part episode "Death Row" with guest star Laraine Newman of SNL fame was hilarious.
I prefer the first few seasons as they were set in the late 1950s with 1950s styles, which gave the show a certain feel that was lost when it moved to California. In latter seasons L & S clothes looked modern (early 80s).
Seasons 3 and 4 are tied the best in my opinion.
Season 5 is a bit darker and even meaner.
Season 6 (Putting aside the Cali. move) regains a little of the comedy ground.
Season 7 is "okay" but gives us some pretty odd shows like
"Crime Isn't Pretty" and "Perfidy In Blue" ( a show about a bluse purse ).
Season 8...well,some good shows but the cracks are really showing.
Topping it off with the silliest idea for an episode "Ghost Story".
Ghost of a former Olympian haunts Laverne's place and
needs to re-run a race to put his soul to rest. Oh brother!
Out of Seasons 6,7 and 8...I have to vote these as the three worst :
1. Ghost Story
2. Perfidy In Blue
3. Crime Is Not Pretty

clearly all the california ep's are the best ... they (the girls) aren't quite as unbelievably dumb and silly (imho)
shareWe originally tuned in to see them funny and silly and share their funny
and even touching adventures. That was what people loved about the show.
But then 1980 comes along and without any explanation, 2 & 1/2 years in their lives are dismissed and they're now 27/28 years old & suddenly ship them out to California...you bet most viewers didn't fid the show as funny.
There was little or no audience present,which to me drained the energy from the comedy. I agre there's some funny shows to find from 1980 to the end but more so,a lot of the episodes are just weird to "This is all I could come up with but let's try it anyway."
Lavere,Shirley,Carmine,Lenny & Squiggy just aren;t as funny later when they're pushing 30. I know,they wanted to maturethe characters but hey...none of us asked them (all involved) to do that.
Go for it or just be a gopher!
