Who else didn't find this show a gagfest?

Then again, I didn't find Happy Days that hilarious either.

The acting was forced in general and too self-conscious. There were some quieter moments that I actually liked better, but on the whole, I didn't find it consistently funny.
L & S were not on the level of Lucy & Ethel like they used to say. Lenny & Squiggy, funny, or just silly? There is a reason why none of the actors ever n nominated.

I see where you're coming from. I'm not really a fan of the show and I just watch it on Hub while waiting for Batman. They're in Season 7 now and I'm starting to wonder just how this show became as successful as it was. By this point, it was obvious that they wanted to be I Love Lucy. In fact, in the Charles Grodin episode, Laverne and Shirley's boss actually refers to them as Lucy and Ethel, and that's exactly who they act like.

I'm just going to say it, everybody on this show is a moron. With Lenny and Squiggy, they're supposed to be morons which is why they're so funny, but with the other characters, they're supposed to be played as straight, but they just come off as idiots. A prime example is last night's episode "Class of '56", where L & S go to a reunion in Milwaukee. A high school reunion? I find it hard to believe they all graduated high school ten years prior, although they act like they should be there. Anyway, Lenny and Squiggy wrote everybody and told them Laverne and Shirley were movie stars and of course they go along with this ruse until everybody realizes they're lying and rightfully kick them out. Instead of owning up to it and realizing they were wrong, what do the girls do? They turn it around on their so-called friends and tell them that if the shoe were on the other foot, they'd have done the same thing. You know what? Whether or not they would have done the same thing is irrelevant, the point is the girls lied and deceived these people. They deserved what they got.

Just because a show is a comedy doesn't mean every character has to be an idiot. That's not funny, that's just agonizing.

Expolrer,
I don't mind a character acting like an idiot, as long as they funny--not silly--doing it. Lucy could be very childish, but she had a way with a line like nobody else, and could make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. What Lucy & Vivian could carry off, Laverne & Shirley could not. If Lucy & Ethel were played by different actresses, it may not had worked either.

reply

That's right, and yet they still tried. Laverne and Shirley tried too hard to emulate I Love Lucy.

"Not only that but in real life Penny Marshall & Cindy Williams are both bitches with no class! At least Lucy & Viv knew how to treat a fan when in public! Thanks."

Seriously? Did you ever meet them?

Interesting. Well to be honest, they don't really seem like very interesting people anyway.

I Love Lucy did it better.

I met Cindy Williams in April 2014 & Penny Marshall in August 2014. Both were extremely nice & friendly toward me - although Penny was more business-like in her overall demeanor.

One of the best sitcoms ever in tv history did not have any sane character on it. All characters on the show were insane idiots in one way or another.

"Green Acres"

I'll say. Sam Drucker seemed to be somewhat of a sane character, and the closest thing to a straight was Oliver.

Watch the early seasons instead of season 7 and you'll see how this show became as sucessful as it was.

If those that posted the negative messages in this thread aren't that
crazy about the show in the first place...why even bother to come here?

It just has never made sense to me to bad mouth a show that was a success and has not been on Network Tv in over 30 years. (Taht goes for ANY show, not just this one.)

Can;t anybody just enjoy a sitcom or other TV shows anymore
without becoming a long after the fact, couch potato critic?

It's a fun show but yes I know, the post Miluakee shows are not perfect but hey, a success is a success. So just accept the show as is, you can;t change the past.

Go for it or just be a gopher!
