I recall when they were setting up this spin-off it was due to double date between these girls and Richie/Fonzie. Fonzie told Richie they were older but don't believe it was ever elabrorated to how much older.
Also when Richie/Potsie made an appearance on here, they spoke about dating mature women.
I saw those episodes. I don't think they ever said exactly how much older Laverne and Shirley were. I don't think they were a lot older. How would you define "a lot"? I don't know. It was probably less than five years. The girls may have felt funny dating guys a lot younger.
shareL & S graduated high school in 1956 ,
Richie ,Potsie & Ralph all graduated one year later.
I think in the Happy Days ep. when L & S are first introduced ,they are possibly supposed to be like 2 or 3 years out of high school. (Shirley's also kind of like Laverne in that she sounds "street smart".)
Later these things change for the series.
The girls graduated in '56 not earlier and
Shirley is made more innocent * naive (and virginal).
Probably an attempt to make them more interesting to younger viewers.
