Accents

Now that they've been playing these on TV again, I notice their accents seem to vanish after the early episodes. Is it just they got tired of doing them or was is negative audience reaction?

reply

Penny Marshall, Michael McKean, and David Lander toned down their New York accents a bit, but (thankfully) Cindy Williams dropped hers all together.

I thought the accents on "Laverne & Shirley" were horrible. Laverne was from New York so it was okay for her to have a New York accent. Did they ever say how old Laverne was when she moved to Milwaukee? No one in the cast besides Laverne and her dad should have spoken with a New York accent.

reply

I noticed Cindy tries to carry a New England accent in the first season but it doesn't fly. By the 2nd season it's gone. Since they are in Milwaukee I see no need for an accent.

reply

The way Shirley spoke sounded more like an affectation than an accent.

reply

Shirley became softer and sounded more innocent than their first appearance on Happy Days.
