Early Characters Appearances

There was Anne Marie Polanski, who became a nun.

Hicky Hector Kestenbaum, who had two appearances.

Alvin Steckler, a guy who chews his socks. Hector likewise also put M&Ms in his socks. Alvin was never shown.

Who was square-head, no-neck? The guy Laverne was supposed to marry? What was his name? Also never shown.

Rosie Greenbaum was clearly replaced with the never-seen Lucille Lockworth. I've always gotten the impression that was supposed to be Rosie in that spot.

Terry Buttafucco. She had about three appearances?

The eraser-heads. Could look them up. Shirley got stuck with one, just the guy, and he was called WALTER (who she would later marry a Walter, didn't she?)

But at the later high school reunion, Eraser-head showed up with a Missus at his side.

We could also consider the lady Laverne hated that she bowled against, and the Shotz tour guide lady Laverne also hated. Tho they never appeared again.

They certainly were a vivid assortment of characters early on, weren't they?

They did have a great assortment of characters in those early years. I wish some of them had come back more often, like the woman she bowled against, or the tour guide lady, or the woman who ran the talent show that first year. They were more interesting than Frank DeFazio (a little of him went a long way) and Edna Babish. I also liked the nutty first landlady, Mrs. Havenwurst, who fancied herself a psychic. Also would have liked to have seen a return visit from Pat Carroll as Shirley's mom, Lily "Barb" Feeney.

One minor correction: Lucille Lockwash was seen once, during the second season, the same year that Carole Ita White was a semi-regular as Rosie. She wasn't meant to replace Rosie; instead I think she was meant to give Shirley a rival, similar to how Laverne had Rosie.

Whatever the reason was for turning Shirley and Carmine away from each other, I wouldn't know (Cindy Williams and David L. Lander were dating early on. I remember when Shirley, Carmine and Squiggy were tied up in the dark and when the lights came back on, Shirley was kissing Squiggy thinking it was Carmine. I thought they looked so odd together), but I would have believed there was some intention for Rosie to be in Lucille's position.

Carmine was actually teaching Rosie to dance once. That would have made Rosie a rival for Laverne AND Shirley, but clearly that wasn't meant to be.

Shirley's mother vanished like Mrs. Babish' handicapped daughter, which I always thought it was odd she moved to California and left her daughter behind.

The only assumption I could make toward many of these characters, Hector, Rosie, etc., is the younger set didn't want to limit themselves to supporting on a sitcom, still being young and wanting to explore their options.

The older ones like Betty Garrett and Phil Foster welcomed the stability.
