This show holds up really well, better than other "classic" shows

MeTV just started showing L&S for their summer schedule. I haven't seen it since I was a kid. It's well-written, smartly paced and performed brilliantly by the excellent cast, especially the two leads. Williams and Marshall apparently hated each other in real life, but their onscreen friendship and gift for physical comedy is a winning combination.

The first four seasons are quite good, despite the constant turnover in the writing staff. Season five shows a noticeable decline (unfortunately, this is when the writing staff stabilized). And seasons 6-8, after they change the setting and move to California, are even worse.

Having watched all 8 seasons last year (as well as fillng in 140
episode descriptions here on IMDb) ,I'll say this about Season 6 to 8.

The episodes are nto "horrible" ,a few are just dull or silly.

Perfidy In Blue (aka The Purse episode) isn't funny or entertaining and the show about Carmine & Frank tryingto catch a burgler that's been taking things from the girl's apt is just ridiculous.

After Shirley leaves at the start of
Season 8 ,the stories are ,I guess ,an acquired taste.

When I got to Season 8 ,here;s what I did.

I played Cindy's last show first (her & Penny in the store window), Then I watched up to Carmine's Hair Today (Etc.) episode. The I played Shirley'ds wedding episode and finaly "The Note" back to back ,making it feel like a 'flashback' and a more satisfying conclusion/finale.

Go for it or just be a gopher!

I don't know to the extent they 'hated' each other. For their ages and who they were, they considered the show an acting job, an opportunity and a way to pay the bills.

They weren't overly chummy then, but I do recall them on Dinah very early on and that's when Cindy spoke about her and David L. Lander dating. She really didn't seem to want to put it out there and he wasn't volunteering any further information either. Nor was any of the other cast members.

Marshall was once on Rosie O'Donnell as well and spoke about her and Williams going to a hotel for some publicity or something, a promotion, and that it was like the hotel in The Shining. That would have been 1980 or afterward, when the show was starting to slide, or by some's regard, already slid.

So even if they couldn't stand each other, they seemed to have maintained tolerance of each other.
