Michael J. Fox as Kate's not-so-secret admirer!
Doesn't anyone else remember this episode? It's from a later season, maybe season 4. Kate is a music teacher at Buddy's high school and catches the eye of a very young Michael J. Fox (pre-Family Ties). It's hilarious. The comedic timing between Sada Thompson and Fox is fascinating. There's a scene where "Richard" (Fox) shows up at the Lawrence's house one night with a bottle of champagne to ply Kate with. Kate asks how on earth he got it since he is only 14 years old. He replies, "I bribed a wino." He sits down very close next to Kate on the sofa and she says, "Richard, would you mind moving over, please?" meaning keep his distance. Instead, without missing a beat, he sidles right up against her and she says, again without missing a beat, "I mean the other way." Kate spends the entire episode trying to get rid of this kid. Finally, she decides to freak him out by suggesting they run away together. He says he's too young to get married. She says, "We'll go to Mexico." He says, "But I'm younger than your kids. I'll tell them to go to bed and they'll laugh in my face." Kate reminds him that he'll have to quit school and get a job to support her and her children. She asks if he has anything he can sell. He says, "Just my ten speed". Finally, it would seem that Kate sufficiently scared the bejeezus out of the boy and they decide to be just friends. But in the final scene it shows Kate and Doug in the kitchen, the happily married couple, when there's a knock on the back door. Doug opens it and "Richard" walks in, completely ignores Doug, and says to Kate, "I sold my ten speed". End of episode. Cue the theme music!
Priceless!
Can't get enough of Sada Thompson!!
