Interesting article about how a proposed statue to him at the University of Washington in Seattle (from which Boyington graduated) ran into opposition:
Freakin' ingrates!!!! I'd be willing to bet that half those students wouldn't have the courage to put down their pencil and stand a post in peacetime, let alone during war. They should be erecting that statue with a smile of their face an be grateful that someone like Pappy was around to give them their freedoms that enjoy so much today.
That makes me so mad! If only todays youth could see the price paid for there ability to say no the statue! I am only 15 but I could just, I don't know what, it makes me so mad. These people who oppose the war and the vetrans obviously haven't ever been prosecuted like the people in Germany were. Had they been, if their freedom was taken away they might understand the price these people paid. The price Pappy paid. Did he not lose friends in the war? Good grief. All these flippin' teens going on about their cell phones and their over priced clothes, if only they knew, really knew what freedom is. Does anyone know how to contact the university?
Yeah, it's a shame the kids didn't recognize Pappy's sacrifices. Shot in aerial combat, POW, flew dozens of super high-risk missions and even conquered his own demons. I was a fan of Pappy and read his book as a sixth-grader. When I was in Iraq serving as an airborne infantryman, I found his book again (in Baghdad of all places) and re-read it fifteen years later. He is again my favorite war hero. Here is a site everyone should look into: http://www.homeofheroes.com/index.html
say what you want about todays youth. even tohugh i am one of them they are stupid. at least i have a 100% perfect excuse for not going to iraq. was ijured while heading with my unit to some trainging. my neck got broken and im being discharged medically. i will say that it is not by choice. all my life wante dot serve. got my chance and after only 2 months got taken away. i know the cost of serving my country and knew when i joined by choice that i may get sent somewhere and come home in a body bag. well i was willing to do that. and if it wasnt for my nekc i would still be serving my country.
What good is fighting a war when your freedom is being taken away 50 to 62 years later such as not being ability to join a union without being fired from your job, and having a miminum wage that keeps up with the the outrageous prices charge by business people, and you have no longer have the right to free speech let alone have access to the court for legal redress against corporations. Furthermore, your job security is nil, and the police violate your rights to remain silence and denied your right to have a lawyer. Just remember folks, the American people had no such freedoms before the Great Depression. It wasn't till after the war, people had such right because they refuse to put up with the working conditions that the pitiful wages that their fathers, grandathers, and great grandfathers had to take from guys like the Bush family.
I've heard this story about Boyington and the students at his alma mater before.
I would certainly love to see Boyington recognized for his combat service. But their refusal to erect a statue of him on the capus has reminded me of his own famous statement: "Just name a hero, and I'll prove he's a bum." It's ironic that the UW students don't see him as a hero today... they see him as a representation of war and violence- in other words, a bum.
"Some who oppose a memorial to Pappy Boyington say that would honor war."
Normally, I'm very tolerant of a little youthful exuburance in the political arena (having been youthfully exuburant myself), but it's when I see things like that that I wonder if we shouldn't go back to the draft. Then maybe they'd realize that there's no such thing as a warrior who wants war. (Well, technically maybe there are, but I don't consider those types warriors, and Boyington certainly wasn't one of them.) You want to blame someone for WWII, blame the guys who started it, not the ones who had to finish it.

I agree with your sentiment in general, and maybe we should give youth (of all classes) a choice between compulsory military service or service in the peace corps (if they have problems with the military) for a year or two when they are 18 or 19. There are other countries that have compulsory military service, why not this country, only they have their choice of peace corps or military. I think this would do well for students to get a more realistic worldview and an undeniable account of global history. I say this because apparently we are raising an entire generation of wikipidiots that don't feel they owe the past a damn thing, and if we are not careful Mike Judge's "Idiocracy" will come to fruition.
Sure, Pappy was hardly a great role model, but his accomplishments are undeniable and should be honored.

It's over 5 years later and you are being proved correct nearly daily. Many of them now work in the media.
