Linda Lavin as Vera's Landlady

What did people think about the second recurring role Linda Lavin did in the later seasons of this show? It was sure different, but I thought it was clever and fun watching her dress up as an older woman who interfered in Vera's life.

I don't even remember this! I must see it.

We live by the Sun, we feel by the Moon

There were at least two episodes if I remember correctly. I recall one was in season 8, and in fact Linda appears in a clip as this character in the revised season 9 opening credits. Then, there was another episode near the very end of the series called 'The Night They Raided Debbie's.' The landlady's name was Debbie Walden.

This was not Alice dressed up as an older woman. It was meant to be an entirely different character, also played by Linda.

I totally enjoyed Debbie Waldon, but I particularly like Sam Butler though

reply

Yes, Sam Butler was fun too-- but "he" was Alice in disguise. Debbie was a completely separate character. No matter how you slice it, Linda Lavin was very talented and she made this show great.

Polly Holliday made the show great!
Thanks!!

I agree that Polly Holliday was very good, but her character sort of grated on my nerves at times. Flo and Belle were rather campy. Jolene who came later was a more down-to-earth type.

But this thread is about Debbie the landlady, not Flo. :) And I think Linda had fun playing her in those two stories.

It helps that Linda also directed episodes, because you can see Linda's stamp more clearly on the series.
