If Vera was so incompetent and "dinghy" as Mels alwasy said about her why did he let her stay there untill the dinner closed instead of firing her. Don't get me Worng I LOVE Vera in fact she'd my favorite but I had to ask anyway

I get the feeling that NONE of them were as bad as they each claimed the others were. For example, they were always saying Mel's cooking was so bad, but everyone kept coming back...so how bad could it have been? Also, didn't he win "Best chili in Phoenix" in one of the episodes? I assume Vera wasn't that bad...she seemed like she would be very nice to the customers.

Basically, they liked busting on each other...

...or perhaps it was just because they were characters...

I don't think Vera could get a job anywhere else anyway. Alice had her **singing** to fall back on plus I think she had a better chance on another job as waitress or whatever.
Flo, Jolene and Belle I think could get a job elsewhere too (Jolene might be easier tho the other two are older)

Today, Mel would be in big trouble for verbal abuse and harrassment, not only of Vera but Flo and Alice too. I think Vera was easily rattled because Mel watched her all the time, just waiting for her to make a mistake. If he'd praised her instead of yelling at her, she would probably have done a lot better.

Mel's bark was worse than his bite.. I always felt that he had a soft spot for Vera deep down.. that is why he kept her around and he felt sorry for her somewhat and was fond of her in his own way.........
