Alternate Ending? [spoilers]

I'd heard about this movie from my mom, who said she liked it but hated the ending. I watched it on DVD and in the end the woman doesn't go back with him, he gets angry, his wife leaves him, and he ends up lonely and angry and, evidently, heading back to work on a ship as the film ends.

My mom Swears that when she saw this in theaters in the 1970's, she ends up seeing him in a city and has a choice either to go back to him or reject him (maybe even kill him) and she chooses to forgive him and love him and go back with him. My mom was angry because she felt like the guy deserved a bullet in the head after the way he treated her. She also recalls hearing something about 'alternate' endings.

My question is, does anyone know if there ARE other endings to this movie out there? My mom is certain she recalls a different one from the one on my DVD (we just watched the end together).

There is only one ending. I saw it in the theaters in the 70's and just rewatched it on DVD and it's the same ending. I think your mom is remembering the scene near the end in the town where they talk on the phone and he suggests they go back to the island. It would be easy to "remember" her making a different decision than she did. I always "remember" a different end for Easy Rider. The mind plays tricks with you like that.
