There should be a new 'Tommy' film.

Based off the musical. In a lot of places I like the original cast recording more than the original album. I think they should make a new Tommy movie that is truer to the musical than this movie was. (Yes, I'm aware the musical came after the movie)

I think it would be interesting to see a new adaptation of the album.

Can you draw with your feet?
It hurts a lot.

reply

Yes. I mean, the movie was great, but I really liked the musical's ending better. The original album's songs were better than the broadway musical, though.

The original performance wasn't, but there are full performances of it on youtube.

Yes, I want a new film based on the Broadway show -- not a literal rendering but using the stage script and concept as a starting point.

Let's just leave things as they are shall we?

The Long Walk stops every year, just once.

They might make a fantastic job of a remake (a la Evita, made donkey's after its 70's heyday). Or they might really muck it up - sanitise the second quarter or just oversimplify the story.

Tricky one but I'd stick with leaving it as it is, personally.

Tommy was only ever meant to be enjoyed the Tommy way. Turn off the lights, listen intently, and let the music create images in your head.

...Or, you know, watching The Who perform it live in their early '70s prime, but that's pretty hard to do these days without a time machine of some sort.

The next-best thing is the concert film Listening to You: The Who at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970. The current DVD release features a lengthy interview with Pete Townshend that is well worth seeing.

What's interesting about the film is that it presents Tommy as the climax of the concert when it was in actuality "bookended" by several non-Tommy songs including a couple of "odds and sods" that I've not seen/heard elsewhere: "I Don't Even Know Myself" and "Water."

What if it were re-interpreted as a new Star Wars Trilogy, designed to deliberately scrap Episodes I - III and start anew? "It's a boy, Mrs. [Sky]Walker. It's a boy!" And then the whole trilogy is about Anakin and his mother's desperate struggles to control his mysterious powers. Think many trips to quacks like the acid queen, or the hawker...then she takes him to reputable "doctors" (the Jedi) and explain that he is simply using the force, and that - given his remarkable talent and lack of self-control - they refuse service (like the doctor from the album who says he cannot help Mrs. Walker's boy). His rise, his followers, his crush (Sally Simpson?), his followers turning on him/him turning on his followers...Anyone else see this being a real thing?

And, of course, the whole mystery surrounding that traumatic experience in his childhood regarding his father/step father, which made Tommy blind/exposed Anakin's powers.

no please no, dont ruin it
