Wabash's Sly Comment

Watched this last night after having not seen it in a few years and picked up a neat comment made by Wabash (John Houseman) when he's talking to Higgins (Cliff Robertson).

When Higgins makes a comment about Wabash's days in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War Two (the OSS was the forerunner of the CIA), Wabash responds, "I sailed the Adriatic with a movie star at the helm!"

Between the last time I watched Condor and my viewing last night, I learned that actor Sterling Hayden (Dr. Strangelove), under the name "John Hamilton," was an OSS agent during the war who served in the Balkans and specifically Croatia, which is on the Adriatic Sea (an arm of the Mediterranean).

Wabash's line has got to be a sly in-joke referring to Hayden, who indeed was more interested in sailing than he was in acting--his acting paid for his sea voyages.
