Why Would The CIA Kill....

Why would the CIA (rogue or otherwise) sloppily kill everyone in a research reading house that the CIA controls?

The hit men used sub-machine guns and made a huge mess of the bodies and the house.

I know it was because Turner (Robert Redford) was close to uncovering the middle east oil field scenario, however it makes more sense to gather the personnel in the house and find out to whom they have discussed the CIA secret plan.

If Turner had not survived and called in to headquarters, resulting in a cleanup of the house, the dead bodies may have been found and investigated by the NYPD and the national news.

Watergate did not have a 7 dead mass killing and look at how out uncontrollable that was for the government agencies. Even President Nixon could not keep that quiet.

I still like the movie. I would just like for the killings to be better handled. Such as, Joubert went to take them hostage and to a different place and things spiraled out of control and he had to shoot the readers and the staff.

Bloodbaths in movies okay if they are better contrived than this one. Geesh Joubert did not even close and lock the front door when the killers left the scene. That's how Condor got back into the house with lunch.

He didn't have to lock the door . . . mission accomplished . . . the authorities would take care of everything . . .

Atwood was killed by the agency because his tactics were about to embarrass the agency. They didn't really like his approach either.

Had they locked the door with no one showing up to open it, Redford would have still called his CIA superiors to report the situation. And what's the point in taking the staff hostage? They would have had to kill them in the end anyway.

The NYPD would not have discovered the bodies - if Atwood organised the killings by professionals, he'd have organised the cleanup afterwards too had everything gone to plan. And the submachine guns were silenced.

I had similar skepticism. Surely the CIA could have discovered that it was mainly Turner who was close to revealing our government's plan to illegally take over oil fields in the middle east. They could have just killed Turner in his apartment, making it look like a robbery. Why not gamble that Turner's death would be good enough to keep the truth from coming out? Most likely everyone else at that agency had their own pet projects to work on, and if they didn't link his apparently accidental death with anything Turner was working on, then it's reasonable to gamble that nobody else would follow up on it.
