Could Walter Matthau be any more annoying in this movie?
Is that possible? His schtick isn't funny, it's infuriating.
"Worthington, we're being attacked by giant bats!"

Well, everyone's taste in what they find funny or not is unique and subjective, so I can't really argue the point of the validity of your statement...
...that being said however, you are utterly and completely wrong.
Willie is supposed to be a cranky old set-in-his-ways Jewish uncle. And he was perfectly played by Walter Matthau. "Enter!"
"I will not go down in history as the greatest mass-murderer since Adolf Hitler!" - Merkin Muffley
Exactly, that I think is the point of his character. Think Walter in Jeff Dunham's act-he is a cantankerous old fart.
shareI think that is supposed to be his character. He is a pain in the ass because he refuses to accept the fact that he is getting old and is bitter.
shareIt's a shtick just as you say, NWN, drawn directly from the caricatures of turn-of-the-century urban Yiddische theater. And one of Matthau's specialties -indeed, his stock persona in films, and no surprises. One is drawn to these films knowing what's to come with him.
If you're infuriated, it's because you're not paying attention, or wishfully contrary. Eat your bowl of Evansville tapioca for your entertainment instead, and leave the other pointy-heads to their distinctive NYC pleasures (which, truth be told, still don't play in the sticks.)
Some nephew!
