This movie says so much about sexual liberation.

This movie was released in 1975 but David Cronenberg has said it was written 5 years earlier, at a time where the First and Second Wave Feminists were taking the women's liberation by storm with things like the birth control pill and the right to have abortions. Women were getting more and more rights and gaining control over their bodies, whereas previously men had tried to rule over them.

Of course the 60s as a generation had been about free love and sexual liberation too, which I imagine would have inspired Cronenberg to write the script. Good horror movies like this one take whatever crisis or state of emergency or big change is happening in the world and then show you the worst case scenario. Thats what makes a good horror movie. If this was remade, which as far as I hear it is, it will have no significance whatsoever. Just as most horror movies dont these days.
