boring.

I wanted to like it, but it's just so boring. And the lead is so unlikable. So little happens in the movie I kept looking at my watch. Definitely not a classic.

I felt let down by this movie too.

I've seen many wonderful 70s movies. It's one of my favorite decades for film. But...Shampoo was definitely a let down and at times outright boring. The presidential primary / hippie party scene was intolerably long. The only scenes that were truly interesting to me and seemed to have some spark of energy were those in the beauty shop. Carrie Fisher's small role was certainly interesting as well for its brief glimpse into a pre-Princess Leia mode.

The beauty shop scenes? Nothing interesting really happened there. And I thought the dinner party scene was the highlight and most memorable of the film. Julie Christie was hilarious!

Plainview:Carrie you are a BASTARD FROM A BASKET!
Carrie:I'll use my telekinesis on your ass!

It's one of my favorites. It takes a few viewings to really get into it, because it's a complex and subtle film. Patience will be rewarded.

reply

I agree. I even watched it again some years later to give it a second chance. Same reaction though.

Watched it last night and kept waiting for it to pick up. George supposedly had all sorts of magnetism but I could not see why. He was absent mostly from the salon and rude while he was there. Why would anyone have been interested in him? Waste of Goldie Hawn's talent. I only liked Lee Grant in the film. Jack Warden was woefully miscast.

reply

I wonder if the movie could have been better.

Well have a blast at Transformers 2 guys. You'll be missed!

reply

I don't want to watch Transformers 2 on the grounds that I will be 50 in August.

reply

It´s a worth a watch for Jack Warden´s performance alone - the f-cker´s hilarious. And the film´s also better than any sex comedy should have a right to be, really.

Better than Annie Hall? No way
I don't think it betters even Wilder's underrated The Seven Year Itch

When you grow-up, you will learn that people can enjoy a variety of different kinds of movies at the same time. No need to limit yourself to just "intellectually challenging" movies.

Or perhaps when YOU ACTUALLY grow up yourself then you shall understand that others are also entitled to their own opinion and can comment as they please.

reply

Verdoux, I understand your response but my comment was merely objecting to the OP about how Shampoo is 'boring'. Shampoo is not boring or really even "intellectually challenging"- it's a mainstream studio comedy that deals with adult themes/situations.

Maybe the OP thought that a film dealing with these adult themes/situations is boring, great, he/she is free to watch whatever they want. But don't call it boring and intellectually challenging. Tarkovsky's Solaris is boring and intellectually challenging not Shampoo.

reply

i respectfully disagree.

i think this film is by far the best comedy of the '70's
